Lufthansa (known also as Deutsche Lufthansa AG) is the largest airline
company in Germany. Founded in 1926 following a merger of two major
German carriers of the time "Deutsche Aero Lloyd" (DAL) and "Junkers
Luftverkehr", the name Lufthansa derives from the Hanseatic trade group
that was mainly active in Northern Europe during the medieval period,
and hence Hansa and the word Luft which means air in German. Lufthansa
has grown into one of the largest airline companies in Germany
operating more than 300 aircraft and employing around 97,000 people
world-wide, with the merger with Swiss International Airlines in March
2005 is set to become even bigger.
