LAN Airlines (formerly LanChile) is the primary commercial carrier of
Chile based in Santiago. It was founded by Chilean Army Air Services
Commander Arturo Merino Benitez (Santiago's international airport is
named after him), and began operations on March 1929 as LÃnea
Aeropostal Santiago-Arica. It changed its name to LAN Chile in 1932. As
of March 2004 LAN Chile and its subsidiaries LAN Peru, LAN Ecuador, LAN
Chile Cargo, LAN Express, ABSA (Aerolinhas Brasileiras), LAN Argentina,
MAS Air, Florida West International Airways (FWIA), and LAN Dominicana
unified under the single LAN brand. LAN stands for LÃneas Aéreas
Nacionales which interprets simply to National Airlines. On 17 June
2004 LAN Chile changed its formal name to LAN Airlines as part of this
re branding process.
